ANTON PANNEKOEK (1873-1960): ASTRONOMER AND SOCIALIST - HIS VIEW ON SCIENCE AND SOCIETY

For his exhibtion 'Inverted Night Sky', Jeronimo Voss was inspired by the Milky Way drawings of Anton Pannekoek. Pannekoek is not only considered to be the founder of astrophysics in the Netherlands, he was also a radical socialist. Although Pannekoek attempted to separate science and politics, there are striking similarities. The speakers at the symposium will critically discuss the aesthetic, scientific and socialist aspects of Pannekoek's work.

Ed van den Heuvel, Emeritus Professor of Astronomy of the University of Amsterdam; Robert Smith, Professor of History of Science, University of Alberta, Canada; Gerrit Voerman, Professor of Development and functioning of the Dutch and European party system, University of Groningen; interview with Jeronimo Voss about his exhibition 'Inverted Night Sky' conducted by Johan Hartle, art historian, Universty of Amsterdam and Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe, Germany.

This symposium is organized in collaboration with IISG, KNAW, Anton Pannekoek Instituut, Stedelijk Museum and SMBA.

In connection with the exhibition 'Jeronimo Voss - Inverted Night Sky' in SMBA, a two-day international conference 'Ways of Viewing Science and Society' will take place at The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). This conference is organized in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Academy and the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy of the University of Amsterdam and explores how scholarship, arts and political ideology interacted during the early twentieth century.

'Economies of Time'

The Dutch council communists of the 1930s outlined "the social revolution is nothing more than the introduction of the labour-hour as the unit measure regulating and controlling the whole of economic life” (The Fundamental Principles of Communist Production and Distribution, GIK Holland). Today, a calculation of the distribution of goods based on labour time appears outdated, given the industrial conditions of enormously increased productivity. Yet, under present conditions of chronic overproduction, what we lack the most of is time. How does the "Economy of Time“ determine our present perspective on politics, or even the visual arts of time based media?
